Discovering Galatea has been one of the best things that could’ve happened to me this summer. Not only am I getting through books in record speed, but an entirely new genre is open for me to explore. I’m currently obsessed with all things fated mates and supernatural romance, and as one of Galatea‘s top werewolf romances, Hated By My Mate was at the top of my list.
The Story
Don’t get me wrong, this book had an interesting story but it just didn’t do it for me. When I think about a mating bond in the werewolf world there’s supposed to be a sort of pull between the characters, a tension that I usually eat up every single time. This book didn’t give me any of that. It felt like the “hated” part of the book was just a minor plotline because of the main character’s lower status in the pack.
Adding on to this, I felt like the entire storyline could have been conducted better. Where’s the description of why the rogues are rogues? What are the rogues fighting for? Why are they even trying to attack the pack? How did they get there in the first place? I didn’t get any of those questions answered. On top of that, the entire Aurora being a silver moon wolf made no sense to me. What’s the importance of it all and why were they wiped out in the first place?
I feel like the story could have been thought out and played out a little differently with a bit more detail. I wanted to know the little things about each character. It felt like this book is a very rough draft.
Characters
Wolfgang annoyed me for pretty much the entire book. As a love interest, sure you can be totally cocky or full of yourself but Wolfgang didn’t show any type of pull towards Aurora. At that point, why not just reject her and be done with it? I don’t see where the issue was? Put the poor girl out of her misery. Even the scenes that were supposed to be full of tension fell super flat for me and I didn’t see Wolfgangs’s attraction to Aurora at all.
Aurora was also a bit of an odd main character. The cards she was dealt were incredibly rough but a few of her actions just had me thinking that a robot must have written this book. All she did was feel sorry for herself and cry a lot. It was getting frustrating and caused me to put the book down so many times.
I think the only character I really liked in this book was Max, the beta of the pack. He was funny and felt like a genuine person. It seemed like he was kind and wanted what was best for Aurora.
Overall thoughts
Maybe my expectations were a little too high but my motivation to finish this book just continued to decrease with every page. I probably won’t continue with the second book and novella as this book alone was super frustrating to get through, but I’m excited to start a new werewolf romance!!
