The Pumpkin Spice Café – Laurie Gilmore

You guys. This book was so freaking cute!!! I’ve had so many bookish besties raving about how adorable this story is and I finally picked it up for this fall season.

The story

When Jeanie arrives in Dream Harbor as the newest owner of The Pumpkin Spice Café, it provides her with the opportunity to start fresh and become whoever she’s dreamed of becoming. She can run the café, become a part of small town life, and finally make her life something that she is proud of.

That is, until she meets the broody farmer who the entire town is incredibly protective over. Logan is nothing short of the grumpy, bearded farmer you’d expect, but when Jeanie greets him at her back door with a baseball bat, nearly ready to take his head off for merely dropping off baby pumpkins, he falls fast and hard.

The two must navigate life in a small town with nosy neighbors, someone sabotaging the café, and a town full of judgy people. Can Jeanie figure out what life she wants to lead? Is Dream Harbor a part of that life? Can Logan sort through the trauma of his past?

The characters

To say I’m obsessed with Jeanie and Logan is such an understatement. I didn’t realize how much I’d connect with Jeanie, the quirky café owner. I mean, how could I not when she’s constantly rambling about one thing or another and on ghost-hunts for half the book? She’s adorable! I love her.

“She wasn’t so much afraid of dying as she was of forgetting to live her life.”

I can’t even start with Logan because I think I’m utterly in love. That man is such a softie for Jeanie and I’m obsessed with it! He’s grumpy and sarcastic and just completely adorable.

The townspeople had me actually giggling throughout the book. I feel like it’s only right to mention them because the smallest moments made the story that much better. I loved Hazel and Annie and their protectiveness of Logan. I loved the book club members and their nonsense gossiping. I loved Logan’s grandma, she was hilarious!

The setting

“And the alpaca?’ she asked, unable to hide the mirth from her voice. Logan grimaced. ‘Harry Styles.’ ‘Harry Styles?’ Jeanie shrieked with glee. ‘Amazing.”

Small town romances give me major cozy vibes but a setting of a Pumpkin Spice Café in October? Unbeatable. The vibes of this book were giving cozy, soft blankets, pumpkins and gingerbread.

The writing

I’ve never read a Laurie Gilmore book before but I can easily say I’m hooked! The pace of the story was perfect, not too fast and not too slow with the right amount of all of my favorite things in there. It was also such an easy read and I zipped through it way faster than I expected.

Final thoughts

I can’t wait to see more of Dream Harbor and its eccentric characters. This was such a fun, light, and enjoyable read!
