Captured Prey by Reno R. Mist – Review

This was such a fun read! I’d never read anything by Reno R. Mist before picking this up. I came across Captured Prey while browsing Netgalley for my next read, and a huge thank you goes out to them for accepting my review request, because this ended up being exactly the kind of book I was in the mood for.

I was specifically craving a dark romance when I found this one, and Captured Prey delivered while also taking me somewhere I genuinely hadn’t been before as a reader. This book explores themes I wasn’t particularly familiar with going in, and having a God of Sin as a major character gave the whole story a mythological, larger-than-life quality that set it apart from a lot of the more grounded dark romance I typically read.

That unfamiliarity ended up being one of the best parts of the experience. It’s always exciting as a reader to pick up a book that pushes you slightly outside your usual comfort zone within a genre you already love, and getting to dive deeper into concepts and dynamics I’d never really explored before made this feel fresh in a way that a more familiar dark romance premise might not have. There’s something genuinely fun about not knowing exactly where a book’s mythology is going to take you, especially when the author clearly has a strong handle on the world they’re building.

I think Mist captured this story really well. The writing itself was easy to read without sacrificing the atmosphere and tension that a dark romance built around a figure like a God of Sin really needs to land. That balance matters a lot in this genre; you want prose that moves quickly enough to keep the tension high, but with enough texture that the darker, more mythological elements feel grounded rather than gimmicky.

The book’s length also worked in its favor. It was short enough to hold my attention consistently from start to finish, while still giving Mist enough room to properly establish this world and its central dynamic. I never felt like the pacing dragged, and I found myself genuinely excited to keep reading at every point, which isn’t always guaranteed with a shorter dark romance where there’s less room to build tension gradually.

By the end, I was left wanting to explore more of Mist’s work, which is always the best sign a book has done its job as an introduction to a new author. Discovering a new voice in a genre I already love, one who’s willing to take the story somewhere a little more mythologically ambitious than the usual dark romance premise, is exactly the kind of discovery that makes browsing Netgalley worth the time.

If you’re a dark romance reader looking for something that steps slightly outside the usual mortal-villain framework and leans into something more mythological and unfamiliar, Captured Prey is a solid, quick introduction to Reno R. Mist’s work, and I’m definitely planning to pick up more from this author.
