Unravel Me – Tahereh Mafi

I’m kind of speechless right now. It’s been a while since I’ve been THIS invested in a series and I can safely say that I am HOOOKED. Unravel Me has taken it to a whole new level, and I can’t say I’m surprised with how Destroy Me and Shatter Me set up this book. 

The Story

Juliette and Adam are tasked with adjusting to their new lives at Omega Point, an underground base for those with special abilities. Juliette is struggling. She’s had no time with Adam, her abilities aren’t developing, and she’s frustrated. It feels endless, like nothing is changing, and she’s ready to do something, so when Castle assigns her to work with Kenji, it’s finally time for her to get up and work for her life. 

Juliette begins to understand that her power is more of a gift than a curse, and it can be used to her advantage. But at the same time, awful news about the immunity that Adam has towards Juliette is uncovered, and she is stuck between loving her powerful skin and hating the body she was born in. 

Warner is once again placed in front of Juliette and it’s up to her to decide what she wants from her life. Is it power that she craves? Or is it the past? And what will she do when war comes knocking on her door?

The Characters

Juliette, where do I even begin? I love her. She’s such a badass. She has her moments where I’m kind of questioning her and who she is just because she cried (A LOT) over simple things. Like we get it, your life is dramatic, your love life is insane. And don’t get me wrong, of course I’m interested. But she has other priorities too, other things that she can be obsessing over. Like maybe the WAR GOING ON??? But overall she really developed into a strong, badass, warrior girl throughout this book. Her weakness was kind of stripped away and she was able to find who she wanted to be and learned to rely on herself which I really admire.

Adam. I started the book out by loving and adoring this boy. Genuinely. I wanted to love him so much. But as the book progressed, he kind of seemed forceful. It was just not what I was looking for. Like I love Adam and I like who he is and what he represents for Juliette, but he just seemed so persistent. I get it, he didn’t want to give up hope, not on Juliette, the girl he’s been in love with forever, but at the same time, war?!?!?! I don’t know, I feel like I’m just not into him the same way, there’s something really off about him, and the family secrets that we uncovered in the book just kind of made it worse for me. 

Kenji. He is my favorite, my love, my funny little sidekick man. He MADE the entire book. Kenji had me laughing and grinning throughout the entire book. He was genuine, he was raw, he was real. He kept Juliette in check, he told her what she needed to hear to get her butt in order. I love him. He didn’t hold back, he was honest and he wasn’t afraid to tell her the truth that she was being completely ridiculous and acting like a child. He made the book. 

Warner. I don’t know where to start. I love him? I’m in love with him? He could step on my face and I’d thank him. I don’t think I’ve ever wanted a fictional man more than I want Aaron Warner. Genuinely. Seriously. I want him. He’s soft and raw and kind but he’s also ruthless and rough and real. He’s a character with so many layers, so much complexity. He makes me want to read about him for hours just learning more and more. I want to know every inch of him. 

The Setting

The majority of the book took place at Omega Point and I kind of love the little sanctuary they’ve got going on underground. I was a little off about it because of the lack of light and windows, but somehow it’s homely and warm and cozy and a setting that feels like a genuine home for people. 

The Writing Style

I’m hooked. The writing style is directed towards a little more of a younger audience, but I am so hooked. I couldn’t put it down. It was real, it was shameless, I loved it.

Do I recommend? 

I am fully captured in this series and I can’t wait to see what happens next. It’s literally two in the morning and I couldn’t put it down. One of my new favorite reads.
