Brother of the King Consort – Amizah R.

I don’t even know where to start. I don’t think I’ve ever been left on a cliffhanger that intense and so utterly heartbreaking. It’s currently three in the morning and I’m wrapped like a burrito in my coziest blanket with my jaw on the freaking floor because how in the world is it okay to leave your readers this heartbroken and lost?!

The story

Seven years after the attack on the palace in Queen of the Dome, Cassian is brought back to palace. The primas from Patriam are sending a message of violence and Cassian is the only one who can speak to Emory, their source of information.

Cassians return allows the members of the council to reminisce on the past and look back on their mistakes and successes. Salem in particular is thoroughly changed from who she was. While she continues to be a strong and noble protector of her queen, she’s quiet and reserved. More so than she’s ever been.

As Cassian runs into Salem, the two realize that they bring out the differences in each other that they’d been missing before. Salem’s life of routine and obsession was brought to a halt by Cassian and as her new feelings arise, she learns that allowing herself to live is a good thing too.

As the primas become restless, the council has no choice but to make drastic decisions, sacrifices on the line. Will the council make it out with all of their family members in tact?

The characters

I knew that Cassian would be one of my favorite book boyfriends but oh my gosh. Seeing the difference in him from the first book in the series to now is incredible and breathtaking. I mean I knew he’d grow up, but this is another level. Not only did he grow up in height, but maturity too. His treatment of other characters was continuously just and fair. I found myself appreciating his decision making and his protection of those he loved. I understood him in a way I didn’t think I would. And also – can we talk about his cat?! That’s right. Our boy Cassian is a cat dad!! How freaking adorable is that?!

Salem was one of those characters that I found myself relating to in the first book and this book had me aligning myself with her even more. Her obsession with daily routines and lack of awareness in certain situations is something that I kind of understood? I personally don’t have the same types of personality quirks but I think it’s such an interesting type of personality that I loved seeing it play out. Not only that but the use of her ability to speak to Cassian is one of my favorite parts of the entire book. They had a bond that reminded me of Feyre and Rhysand from A Court of Thorns and Roses with their mind speaking.

Both of these characters came together in a way that I expected but loved nonetheless. I found myself enjoying the tension between them and how they interacted in awkward situations that only made it even better. The chemistry that they have is undeniable and I loved seeing it play out to the end destination. It was funny to see how protective they became over each other considering they’re both some of the strongest of the group. Their possessiveness over each other was adorable and had me falling for them as a couple that much more. While it may be their downfall, it shows how much they both love and care for each other and how they’d never let the other sacrifice themselves.

Seeing Cade and Deianira seven years later was a shock to my system. I loved their story and how they got together was so beautifully tense and chemical. The two still compliment each other perfectly, but I did find myself wishing that Deianira and Cade were able to show a bit more of their strengths. I know that the book was focused more on Salem and Cassian, but I felt almost like Cade and Deianira were powerless and for the king consort and Queen of Terra, they should be showing a lot more strength and unity.

A character that definitely hasn’t changed (much to my expectations) is Devin. As hilarious as always, Devin being married to Emory was expected and lovely. I’m happy for him and the fact that he’s living a life with his wife that he absolutely adores. Add onto the fact that he’s got two beautiful twin girls and it made me overjoyed for him to be in a place where he’s genuinely happy compared to being stuck in dangerous situations and putting himself through hell.

The writing

I will never ever get enough of this writing style. I don’t know what it is but I’ve zipped through the first book and now this one too. This series has gotten me out of a HUGE reading slump and I honestly think that this might be one of my new favorite series because of the easy to read writing and fast paced storyline.

My thoughts

I honestly can’t get enough of this series. I only started it yesterday and despite the fact that each of the books is over 300 pages, I’ve gotten through one each day and I love that. I love how fast paced it is and I love how I can’t stop reading. The hours keep ticking by and I can’t get this story out of my head. I’m downloading King of Patriam: Outlaws as I’m writing this so you know I’m heading straight over to my kindle to get my hands on this book. No sleep for the bookworms, of course.

If you’re a lover of fantasy, romance, high tension and an action packed story, this is the series for you. Queen of the Dome will have you downloaded the other two books in the trilogy as soon as you start it and you will never ever want it to end. I can’t believe I’m going into the last book in the series already, I don’t want to say goodbye to these beautiful characters and this amazing world!
