Hi everyone and welcome to a new segment – Behind the Pen. I’m super excited to get started on this as I’ve met some amazing authors recently that deserve their work showcased and supported! I figured this would be an amazing way for authors to showcase their upcoming work and a way for me to support them through their writing journey.
Our first author is E. Cameron, an author I met through ARC reading her book, Midas Touch! This read was AMAZING, and I couldn’t get enough of the characters. Lucky for me, I was able to join her street team which is a supportive group of members that love to share Cameron’s work! Without further ado, let’s get into the interview!
Journey to Becoming the Storyteller
Can you introduce yourself to our readers?
My name’s Cameron, I’m 22 and I’m from the South East part of England. Outside of writing I work in a fast-food restaurant and I am about to start University as an England BACHONS student. I have two cats that are my absolute world and in my own free time I go to the gym, rewatch horror movies or I’m usually traveling to different countries.
What first drew you to writing as a craft? How did your author journey begin?
I first began writing on Wattpad when I was 13. I wrote fanfiction for boybands at the time, mainly 5 seconds of summer, and then went into writing normal fiction about my science teacher who I was in love with at the time haha.
Side note: wattpad was my best friend in middle school too. All the best people had a wattpad phase!
Are there any authors or books that inspired you or significantly influenced the way you write?
After by Anna Todd 100% and Call Me By Your Name by Andre Acimen. I also read a lot of fanfictions that are no longer available that inspired me, too.
What was the most surprising part of your publishing experience?
The community I found. I never thought it was this big. When I was younger I was scared of saying I wanted to be a writer because most people in my year group wanted to be influencers, models, footballers, the usual. Then I found this community here on Instagram and TikTok and had no idea there was a whole world out there of people just like me. Also, that self-publishing could be done all by yourself – as silly as it sounds. I always thought publishing had to be done through a publisher in any form.
Where do you find is the best place for you to brainstorm your writing? Do you have a specific area in your house or a favorite cafe where you always end up writing the best?
I am the most unorganized person you will ever meet. I have never owned a diary for that reason. Almost everything important in my life including very important information is always in the notes app on my phone. I wish I was organized when it came to planning but I’m not. I wing everything, including my ideas. I normally find they come to me spontaneously and when I’m not actively seeking out writing prompts and ideas.
Let’s Talk Midas Touch
After reading Midas Touch, I found myself loving the character of Lucky. Do you have a favorite character from the book? If so, why?
Maya. Maya is so incredibly strong, including Wren. I found myself incredibly attached to those characters. All of them are based off of people I have known in my life, people I aspire to be, people I dislike. Maya and Wren are the two I wish to be given how they handle the things that happen to them. Of course you have Wade and Lucky, they’ll always be in my heart but those two girls – I will forever hold a soft spot for them and want to give them a hug, honestly.
Did you find yourself relating to any of the characters in Midas Touch?
Lucky is a given as he’s written straight from my mind and everything I feel, he feels. I relate a lot to Maya though, based on the circumstances she comes from and how she handles what she handles.
Which scene from Midas Touch did you enjoy writing the most?
The wedding scene. The tension building up to it, the anticipation of whether Lucky will choose Wade or not. It really was the ultimate conflict.
What’s Next?
You have a few WIP currently, which one are you looking forward to sharing with readers the most?
Teach Me. It is the most taboo thing I have ever written, it’s chaotic, it will be my first time really stepping into dark romance and splatterpunk, the characters are all different, it’s also my first time writing a heterosexual couple and a dual pov. I am extremely nervous but have so many ideas for it and I cannot wait to show it to the world.
Do you have a scene you’re most looking forward to writing in the future?
I have a few scenes with Lucian I am looking forward to writing, especially given his character is a stalker and mass murderer. It’s going to be very interesting exploring his relationship with Morgan.
What can readers anticipate from your upcoming book “Teach Me”?
Chaos. Absolute chaos. Unhinged characters, a lot of heavy smut, very graphic murder scenes (if people are reading it for those elements) and diabolical torture scenes. I don’t want to overhype it but I really am excited for it!
More about E. Cameron
If you could describe your writing in three words, what would they be?
Maybe descriptive because I like to explore characters and situations to the fullest to really serve the picture, I like to think of it as unique because I like throwing different curve balls and mixing tropes and finally, a cocktail of helpless romantic fantasies.
