Project Chimera: Chimera’s Fire – S.H. Steele

This was certainly an exciting little book. This 35-page book had me hooked from the first chapter and I was super intrigued by everything going on. 

Plot

Project Chimera is a group of three supernatural individuals that fight crime and bring justice to the world. River Murphy, our main character, is a shapeshifter. Verity Monroe is able to turn herself and things around her invisible, and Clark Hudson’s ability makes everyone who hears him tell the truth. 

Using their abilities, they go on covert missions keeping the world safe from harm, that is, until their supervisor, Director Hunter is murdered by a mysterious group called Orthrus. 

The group of three make their way through their latest mission, figuring out why their Director was murdered, bringing the person who did it to justice. 

Characters

Let’s start with River. River was actually super cool. I’m a sucker for anything supernatural and being inside a shapeshifters body was awesome. River seemed like a great person and I’d definitely like to know more, especially how or why River and the rest of Project Chimera got their abilities? Along with River, Verity is also supernatural and invisibility is her gift. Honestly I love that superpower so it’s super cool to see her use it. Clark was probably my favorite character. He seemed super funny, and was always playful when it came to his friends. 

We don’t get to see a ton of these characters in the short amount of time that we meet them, so I’m quite excited to learn more about them and their pasts. 

Setting

We start the story out in a huge office skyscraper where the team is doing a mission. It seems like a pretty ordinary place and what you’d imagine any office space is like. 

Then we moved onto a safe house which I imagined as a sort of hidden cabin type house. I feel like the safe house is familiar to the characters which is why I quite enjoyed the setting.

We are then able to see a bit of the inside of Nexus, the spy organization that Project Chimera works for. It doesn’t seem super welcoming, but I suppose that is what you’d expect from a spy organizations base. 

Writing

I really liked the writing. I’ve never read any of Steeles books before and I quite liked the style of it. I was hooked by the first word and I didn’t stop until I’d finished!

The writing was captivating, it kept me intrigued and I wanted to know more right from the first line. 

In Conclusion… 

I really enjoyed this. I think it’s a great way to start off an intense series. I’d quite like to learn more about these characters and how exactly they got in this situation in the first place, as well as what’s going on with this other organization that’s fighting against them. I’m excited to see where this series takes me.
