Owned was a short and quick read which is exactly why I picked it up. I was in the mood for a mafia romance—something that would make a dark and possessive MMC shine—but unfortunately, this fell a little short for me.
From the get-go, I struggled to get behind the plot of this book. We’re immediately thrust into Nikki’s POV and she’s just been confronted with her dad literally selling her to a man because he lost a bet??? It’s giving “sorry honey, I just sold you to one direction to pay off our bills.”
We’re slowly introduced to our love interest, but he’s grumpy and obviously can’t date because it’s a “distraction” and yet he’s willing to fuck around with her for an entire night as a “one night stand” despite knowing that he actually owns her. It was all just a little too… predictable.
Maybe it’s the fact that I’m new to Grey’s writing, but I just couldn’t find the passion between these characters. While their first encounter was fun to read, it didn’t have me grasping for more. I think a huge issue that I had was that there wasn’t much dialogue between them. While their internal dialogue was there, I didn’t get any of the outward communication that usually helps a relationship thrive. Sure, their first real interaction was a one-night-stand kind of thing, but where’s the excitement? The passion? The YEARNING?

I am curious to see how the series continues though which is why it got an extra star from me. The ending was fun. It was a cliffhanger. Nikki is kind of left reeling and confused about how to go forward from here, and I am interested to see what she does with the information she’s just been told. That being said, I probably will only pick up the second book when I’m desperate for a binge-read situation.
I have to give Grey props. She’s managed to create a found family vibe that is genuinely cute. There’s chemistry between the MMC’s “family”, even though there isn’t a lot of chemistry between his love interest. And I liked Dani, our MMC’s kid. That was probably my favourite part of the book—seeing our MMC interact with his kid and be a genuinely good dad. It seems like everything he does is for his kid, which did make me enjoy the story a little more.
Overall, a good read to pick up when you’re in the mood for something easy to read and quick to zoom through, but not something I’d recommend for deep, intense, and delicious mafia romance.
