A Court of Mist and Fury – Sarah J. Maas

This book was even better than the last. The characters, the writing, the plot twists, everything was absolutely amazing and just added to my growing love for this series. 

The Plot

After Amarantha’s curse was broken by Feyre, the king of Hybern is gathering sources to go to war with Prythian. This book revolves around Feyre and her friends discovering more of Prythians’ history as they work towards defending the place they call home. 

I have to say that this storyline is so much better than the last. It is so interesting to learn about the history of the Night Court and their amazing cities, as well as learning about the rest of Prythian. 

I have to say that the ending had me in near tears, so be warned. It was incredibly surprising how it played out but it was definitely the perfect way to conclude the book. 

Setting

The story begins in the Spring Court which was described in the previous book. It is still a place that I’d love to visit one day along with Tamlin’s gardens full of roses, however, the Night Court has now become the most intriguing setting to me. 

The Night Court contains two main cities, the Court of Dreams and the Court of Nightmares, and the Court of Dreams really does sound incredible. Velaris sounds like a city that never sleeps and I have always been a city person and loved seeing the lights and people at night. It is definitely a place that appeals to me and I would absolutely love to visit it and stroll through the artist’s quarter. 

Characters

Feyre is now turned into High Fae, so her character development is really significant to the storyline. After what happened Under the Mountain, she was haunted by her decisions which only made her more powerful. Feyre grows as a character, in strength and courage. She learns to harness the powers given to her and is able to really come into herself. This book made me really love her strength and the way she can hold her ground. Many times throughout the book it was clear that she never wanted to be babied and could take care of herself which I really found myself admiring. 

My favorite character Rhysand was amazing in this book. His history really showed in each action he took and as I discovered more about him, it was clear to see why he acted the way he did. His protective side takes over with his friends who are now his family, and I really love that about him. Rhysand is a character that everyone should love. He received a bad reputation for what happened Under the Mountain, but it was overall in order to protect the people he loved which is really strong of him. I think that his history affected him more than he let on, and it was really nice to see how he was softened by the people he cares about even if he does put on a mask sometimes. I also really loved his banter with Feyre down their shared bond and the notes. Throughout the entire book, all he cared about was her well being, and safety which I think is a really thoughtful character trait for him.

We were also introduced to four newer characters, Cassian, Azriel, Mor, and Amren. These four were Rhysands family and friends and I think that each of them was so significant to the development of the story. Cassian’s strength showed in every action he took. All he wanted was to protect the friends that he has cherished throughout his whole life. Azriel was a quieter character, the calm to Cassian’s crazy, however, his amazing powers of being a shadowsinger were really interesting to learn about. Mor was kind of the perky character out of the group, and she always made me smile with her playfulness throughout the darkness. Amren was an interesting character by the fact that she was not high fae, but a creature from another world. Amren was able to read a long lost language, and her powers of mind control are deadlier than I expected them to be. 

Tamlin also played a role in this book, however, it was brief. I really didn’t like who he had become, and as the book went on, I hated him even more. Tamlin had turned into a character that was controlling and even though it was his protectiveness that caused him to be that way, it was still really annoying. From the last book, I thought that Tamlin would be kinder and grateful towards Feyre for breaking his curse and loving him, however, none of that showed, and as the book went on, all that came from him was his complete and utter need to control everything. This really made me hate him as a character and I realized just how blind Feyre had been to be trapped by him for three months after Under the Mountain.

Writing

The writing in this book was amazing. With every word that Sarah J. Maas wrote, I was hooked even more to the amazing story. 

This book had me on the edge of my seat waiting for something to happen, or sometimes I was laughing along with the characters. It was really easy to feel everything exactly how it was written and I really really liked that about this book. 

In Conclusion… 

I really really recommend this book. I didn’t think this series could get any better, but it definitely did and I am hoping the next book adds onto that. This is probably one of my most favorite series so far, and I have to say that I am definitely reading the next one!
