As someone who has always loved reading and writing, I figured it was time for me to take my ideas and make them into something real.
Writing has always been a form of escape for me. Creating characters and fictional worlds that I can get completely lost in is something that I love doing, and since I’m a beginner, I figured I’d share the tips that got me started!
Tip #1: Prompts
My ideas were always amazingly creative in my eyes, but putting them down on paper was a struggle. Since then, I’ve practiced using writing prompts! There are tons and tons out there and with each prompt, every author comes up with a beautifully written and unique story. It’s hard to believe that this kind of thing will work, I know, but after trying a few of them and getting my mind flowing with creativity, I felt more confident in my writing and was able to get my words out on the page.
If you want some writing prompts check out my Pinterest board here or my Tumblr account here which both contain some great prompts to get you started!
Tip #2: Worldbuilding
Whether you’re someone writing a short story, a novel, or a huge series, worldbuilding plays a huge role in your writing. Worldbuilding was something that I’d struggled with immensely, but I found that making a basic map helped me think of my worldbuilding notes.
Using a pencil and piece of paper, I briefly sketched out my world. Now you don’t have to be an artist for this to work, just make it easy for you to visualize. It’ll help you create a map inside of your mind, making your story even more detailed when it comes to your worldbuilding.
This tip helped me a lot and I was able to create a world that I really found myself loving. With each change to my map, I was able to visualize my world a bit more.

Tip #3: Routine
Committing to a routine has got me way farther in my writing journey than you’d expect. When I started writing, I committed to an hour a day write before I went to sleep and it has trained my body to feel more creative and ready to write.
This tip has really helped with my writer’s block and organization when it comes to my stories. I feel “in the zone” and ready to write instead of focusing on something else.
Tip #4: Groups
Joining a writing group is super motivating. Surrounding myself with other aspiring authors has shown me the dedication and time that we all have to this certain art and how we can learn and grow from each other.
There are so many writing groups that you can join, and I’d definitely recommend using NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) as well.
Tip #5: Research
When it comes to research, keep all of it in one, easy-to-access place. It’s so important that your research is clear and easy for you to see. Your understanding of your writing is what gives readers understanding as well.
Whether you’re already a best-selling author, a poet, or just starting out, research is incredibly important to any story.
Tip #6: Perfection
Let go of perfection. I know, easier said than done, but letting go of your levels of perfection and expectation will help your writing grow. Comparing your writing to others will get you nowhere
Tip #7: Be a Beginner
If you aren’t a best-selling author or writer, don’t think of yourself as one. You’re a beginner and beginners make mistakes and experiment. Work with what feels right for you, don’t strive for perfection.
Enjoy your writing!
