Before I start this review I’d like to give a huge thank you to Netgalley and Forever for providing me with an e-book copy of Worst in Show in exchange for an honest review.
Worst in Show was a super cute rivals to lovers story filled with competition, tension, and of course, dogs! Going into this story I had no idea what to expect, especially since I’d never read anything by Collins before, however, I was pleasantly surprised at the easy-to-read writing style and humor from all of the characters!
The story
I love me a good rivals to lovers story and this definitely delivered! With Cora’s grandfathers pet shop going through their hardest financial year yet, another competing pet store is the worst possible thing to happen to Happy Paws. Except of course, Canine King, the new store opening right across the street is run by the very hot man that was a year above Cora in high school, Leo.
With Cora deciding that the best course of action is hostility towards Leo, the two begin a competitive streak and place bets on small things to win. As their competition continues, both Cora and Leo realize their feelings may be growing into an expected path.
With a mystery surrounding Leo’s history, an intriguing online messenger, and a dog show to win, can Cora finally find what she wants in life?
The characters
I have to admit, Cora was a fun character to get behind. I felt like I could understand her and her frustrations. She wants the best for everybody that she loves and she often puts herself on the back burner because of that. I feel like I get that feeling and I wish she put herself first more. It was clear to see that those she loved wanted the exact same for her, to be happy.
There were a few times throughout the book where I did have to kind of yell at Cora to get her shit together. Maybe I’m crazy but she did sometimes get on my nerves with her incessant complaints. If something is wrong, then work to fix it. And if you’re digging yourself into a hole, reconsider your choices. Maybe that’s just me.
Leo, I adored. I felt like he was never really into the rivals part of Cora’s side of the relationship. He was always soft and sweet to Cora and it seemed like Leo was a genuinely good guy. His small gestures had me falling deep for Leo.
Two honorable mentions: Harvey and Micki. These two led the show. Harvey was such a fun character and he was the comedic aspect of the book. He added so much fun to the story! Micki was also amazing and I loved her character. Constantly supportive, I felt like she’s the ultimate best friend.
The writing style
As I mentioned a little earlier, the writing was super easy to understand and read. I love how quick all of the chapters were and how fun and quirky all of the characters seemed to be.
Do I recommend?
