Behind the Pen: Ashley Earley

Hi everyone! Welcome to another author interview. I’m so excited to present today’s author, Ashley Earley. Her book came out a few days ago and I can’t wait for you guys to get your hands on it!

Your Journey to Becoming an Author

  1. Can you introduce yourself to our readers?

Hi! I’m Ashley Earley. I live in Kansas with my fiancé and two pups but am originally from Georgia. I spend my spare time devouring any book I can get my hands on, writing, and editing for my clients at Earley Editing, LLC. I’m also a mountain girl, as I graduated from University of Colorado Boulder with a Bachelor’s in English with an emphasis in Creative Writing back in 2021.

As a writer, I lean more toward fantasy and then all things creepy, hence my one horror novel. As a reader, I am pretty all over the place with fantasy, romance, thriller/suspense, horror, and cozy books.

Outside of that, yes, I am obsessed with my dogs. I also enjoy snowboarding, cooking, long walks, and sharing my writing and editing experiences on social media.

  1. What first drew you to writing as a craft?

Since I was so young when I started writing, I think it was the creativity of it. I can create a whole new reality to escape into, create characters from nothing, and can weave in unique elements. The characters I create always find ways to influence the story I’m writing.

  1. How did your author journey begin?

My author journey began when I was fourteen. I was obsessed with X-Men and had only recently gotten into reading because of Twilight and Harry Potter, and around that same time, I discovered the online writing space with Wattpad and other writing-centered websites. I wrote my first terrible draft and loved every minute of it, so I never stopped writing after that. I learned about traditional publishing and self-publishing, tried my hand at both, and then started self-publishing once I really knew about the craft. (I ignore anything I published as a kid and hope y’all do the same! Haha!)

  1. Are there any authors or books that inspired you or significantly influenced the way you write?

I would have to say Stephen Graham Jones has been one of my biggest inspirations. I took an advanced writing workshop with him in college and attended a couple of his talks and signings. His knowledge of writing craft, publishing, tropes, themes, and more has influenced the way I view the industry. Not only did reading The Only Good Indians leave my stomach in knots, but I often find myself researching the details and ebbs and flows of the industry to keep up with what is happening because of how admirable his extensive knowledge is.

  1. What was the most surprising part of your publishing experience?

Honestly, how much upfront planning and cost is involved. Indie authors do not get enough credit for how they are working many jobs under one in the hopes of their books being some type of success. We are marketers, content creators, writers, formatters, often editors and artists, and much more! It’s amazing to watch authors grow and thrive when they have so much on their plate!

  1. Where do you find is the best place for you to brainstorm your writing? Do you have a specific area in your house or a favorite cafe where you always end up writing the best?

Full transparency here, I get a lot of my ideas while in the shower. I feel like there are a group of authors who have the same experience. I think that’s where I’m most relaxed, so my mind is able to wander to my story. Second to that would be a local coffee shop! I will go there to write, brainstorm, edit—all the things!

Let’s Talk Recent Releases

  1. Tell me about your most recent release. What drew you into the story?

Forbidden Captive (Legends & Predators #1) is a slowww burn enemies to lovers romantasy between a Viking and a shapeshifter.

Zyra has always wanted to be seen and valued, so when she is tasked with returning a Viking to his territory, she is ready to prove herself, despite the chance she won’t come back. Riker is wanted for a treasonous crime he did not commit, and his father wants him returned for execution. But Riker knows there is too much at stake if he returns before he can warn the realms of what is to come if his father succeeds. Swept into a staggering world of deceit, betrayal, and unforeseen passion, a forbidden attraction unravels in Forbidden Captive (Legends & Predators #1).

The idea for the characters and the rivalry came to me almost ten years ago. I wanted a story that portrayed the theme that no one should judge or make assumptions about others. From there, the story developed into one about how even if a great betrayal comes from someone you love, there are always others who will reach out a hand. And that love and care can come from the most unlikely of places.

  1. Who is your favorite character in this story, why?

Riker, our viking male lead, of course! I’m drawn to how complex Riker can be. He feels deeply but was brought up not to show such emotions, so they often manifest as anger. When it comes down to it, though, he is a protector.

What’s Next for You?

  1. Do you have any upcoming books or novellas in the works?

Yes! I’m working on the prequel novella for the Legends & Predators series.

  1. Where did you gain the inspiration for these next projects?

Forbidden Captive (Legends & Predators #1) picks up where Riker is running from his father’s men to avoid execution. Because of this, I wanted to go back in time to show how Riker got into the position in the first place. Plus, given the big plot twist in the first book, I figured readers would want to know a bit more about the backstory.
