Let’s talk.
Guys, I gotta be honest here and this book just did not do it for me. It took me ages to get through the first few chapters despite loving the previous book in the series. I even had to put it through an audiobook just to have it in the background of other things.
I can’t tell if it’s because of the character change, the actual story or just my lack of motivation to read this book. I was so excited to get into Legendary, to figure out who Legend really is and to read about Tella’s story, but none of that did it for me. I didn’t like the story, I didn’t like Tella as the main character, and the revelations were kind of just predictable? Where’s the excitement, the magic, and the crazy plot twists of Caraval? Where did it all go? Jacks being a fate was predictable, him being in the carriage? Predictable. Maybe it’s because this is a more middle-grade kind of story and I’m just not in that mood. Whatever it is, this book just didn’t give me anything I was looking for and hoping for.
“Every good story needs a villain.
But the best villains are the ones you secretly like.”
Worth it?
I honestly can’t even tell you that I recommend this book. I feel like Caraval hyped me up so much for this book and all of the unanswered questions. I wanted to know more about the Dragna sisters, Julian and Scarlett, and how the rest of the Caraval games would continue. I wanted to know about the sister’s mother and where she went. I wanted to understand it all but it was all so predictable and layed out for me? I feel like I spent hours and hours reading this book just to give me nothing.
I’d say that you could google this book and spoil it and still not be shocked. I feel like you don’t need to read this book at all. I’m not going to spoil it for anyone as I feel like if you’re really into Caraval and the characters then maybe you’ll love Tella and her story, but it was just too predictable for me and I wasn’t really interested.
Continue?
Yes, I’m continuing the series. I’ve heard great things about Finale (Legendary too), but I’m willing to give it a chance. I want to see how the story ends and how Tella and her relationship ends. I also feel like it’s just four hours to audiobook it at 3x speed and I have to at least try.
Thoughts
If you’re trying to get out of a slump this will put you into an even bigger one, in a bad way. It was boring and quite slow, I feel like it could’ve been cut down a good 300 pages. The main character is a little too full of herself and a little too much for me. I love a good female character but Tella just bugged me. Best of luck to those of you going into this story to read Once Upon a Broken Throne like I am.
